Workshop 5 (Half Day – English)
Writing and Publishing Environmental Health Research: a step-by-step workshop for graduate students and junior faculty
Course Faculty: Frederico Peres (Brazil), Luz Claudio (USA)
Time: TBA
Target Audience: Graduate students, junior faculty and young researchers
About This Workshop:
This workshop aims to present and discuss strategic tips and some of the most common mistakes made in the process of preparing and publishing scientific papers on environmental health. Aimed at graduate students and junior faculty, the workshop is structured in two parts. In the first part (1.5 – 2 hours) the workshop will focus on tips and tricks on how to write a scientific article on environmental health (e.g. creating a structured abstract, a concise introduction, presenting methods clearly, selecting the results, developing a solid discussion and relevant conclusions), with an emphasis on the essential aspects for good readability and acceptance of the manuscript for publication. This initial part will be structured through expository presentations, followed by dynamics with the participants. In the second part of the workshop (1.5 hour), editors and reviewers of environmental health journals will be invited to participate in the discussions, organized in a roundtable format, highlighting to the participants the main issues identified during editorial analysis and peer review of an environmental health article, based on practical examples brought by these reviewers/editors and by the participants themselves. Discussion will focus on methodologies and approaches commonly used in environmental health research, as well as in specific publication formats such as research reports, comments, systematic and scoping reviews, position papers, among others. At the end of the workshop, participants are expected to understand the main steps and aspects that lead a scientific article on environmental health to be published or rejected by an academic journal. Although not a prerequisite for participation in the workshop, participants are expected to bring information about articles they are currently writing or recently submitted to an academic journal.
