Workshop 6 – (Half Day – English)

Considerations Regarding Race, Ethnicity, and Gender in Research Methodology and Publishing

Course Faculty: Kim Gaetz (USA), Sabah Quraishi (USA), Tarik Benmarhnia (USA)

Time: TBA

Target Audience:Β Researchers with a variety of experiences in environmental epidemiology and health equity research, especially early career researchers.

About This Workshop:
In environmental epidemiology studies, it is a common practice to collect data on important aspects of a person’s social identity (race, ethnicity, cultural group, gender) that may influence exposure to environmental risk factors. Epidemiologists and demographers are also recognizing the importance of allowing participants to self-identify when collecting primary data; study instruments need to be flexible enough to capture a more accurate picture of intersectional social identities. Moving beyond token adjustment for dichotomous race and ethnicity and high-income country perspectives, in this workshop we will discuss the landscape of social identities as they relate to environmental epidemiology research, including but not limited to environmental justice research, from different stages in the research process– data collection and data analysis to data reporting and publication. We will discuss the importance of knowing the social context of secondary data and extant datasets before analysis. From the editorial perspective, we will discuss how to respectfully communicate to an international audience. In this workshop, we will hear from leaders in environmental justice and international research including editorial board members for ISEE partner journals, and the newly re-launched Journal of Health and Pollution. We hope to engage researchers with a variety of experiences in environmental epidemiology and health equity research, especially early career researchers. We plan to continue this discussion via a panel or roundtable discussion during the conference.
